It
is with great please we can announce that Craggy Island
is to open a new Dedicated Bouldering Centre in the South
London Borough of Sutton this Autumn! Yes, the son of
Craggy is now official, we can confirm that a lease has
been agreed with both Surrey Oaks Sports Centre and Sutton
Borough Council.
The
building is an old squash courts facility
containing 6 courts, one of which is already converted
to a changing area with a mezzanine above, with the
remaining 5 courts being altered to house well over
500 sq meters of world class bouldering.
The
location is off the Woodmansterne Road in Carshalton
and is situated in the beautiful landscaped grounds of
the Surrey Oaks sports club. The site is just south of
Sutton and south west of Croydon and has plenty of parking.
The M25 is also only a short distance away.
The
schedule will be to renovate and alter the
building ready to house the wall. Then install the
climbing walls over the summer and furnish and equip
the centre to be ready to open in September 2008.
The
climbing will be housed in 3 distinct areas,
squash court 1 will be a beginners and kids bouldering
room (that can be closed off from the rest of the facilities,
so that any disturbance from groups/parties will be kept
to a minimum). Courts 2 & 3 will be predominantly
intermediate zones with some featured sections and courts
4 & 5 will be
opened out to house a very impressive competition wall
and training area for the serious boulderers.
The
aim is to provide a large dedicated bouldering facility,
that like our Guilford centre has enough capacity and variety
of climbing to satisfy the serious climbers right through
to people wanting to try the sport out for the first time
in an exciting and friendly arena.
