Craggy Island indoor climbing

Guildford

Craggy Island is very proud of the Kids Clubs. Over the years we have built the thriving community of young climbers and are constantly looking for ways to improve.

We have over 400 children taking part and many more on waiting lists for the popular time slots and do not have room to take any more. Why? Maybe because we believe the emphasis should be on fun as well as climbing safely and learning the sport. What do the children get out of it? Climbing hits many key aspects, confidence, fitness, self asteem, trust, adrenaline. . . and best of all kids love to climb!

We also now have a regular posse of parents who like to chill out in our cafe overlooking the climbing arena, maybe to have a cup of tea, carrot cake or smoothie. Or maybe to do a bit of work, or bring your laptop and browse the internet with our free wiFi Internet. Or maybe to just sit and read the paper or a book. Bliss!

We have three clubs as follows
Mini KidsClub (for 5 to 7 years old)
Kids Club (for 8 to 16 years old)
Craghoppers (for more experienced 14 to 17 years old)

Mini Kids Club

The Mini Kidsclub was devised for our youngest climbers. Each trained instructor has a maximum of four children in their care and will gently encourage them to climb to the best of their abilities. Everyone receives an award sheet where as they achieve climbs they receive rainbow stamps to climb towards their pot of gold! (well actually, a bag of gold chocolate coins).

Before you know it, you have a small climber in the family!

The club runs once a week during school term with a break for half term and lasts eleven weeks. Each weekly session lasts one hour and includes instruction and hire equipment apart from from climbing shoes which can be hired for £2.50 a pair. 5 to 7 years old only.

Please note that every child climbing at Craggy Island must have a completed Parental Consent form which lasts for each term. No form no climb! Forms are available at our reception or call 0844 8808866 or click here to download.

There is no need for any special equipment or clothes. Loose fitting sporting kit and trainers are all you need and trousers are preferred rather than shorts to avoid grazed knees. Large 'box' sneakers are not ideal to climb in, clean, soft soled, laced trainers are preferred.

Cost is £110 per term

Kids Club

This is where is gets serious (in a fun way of course). There are up to 30 children in a regular club split into groups depending on ability. With six children per trained instructor everybody receives an award sheet, there are four in all. Every week kids are encouraged to complete a series of tasks to do with climbing, we teach various aspects of safety and technique and have fun at the same time. There are four levels, all becoming harder from Trust to Bronze to Silver and Gold. Every time a sheet is filled they will receive a high quality colour printed award to keep and a badge.

We have spent years developing these courses and believe them to be the best way to introduce a young climber into the sport. Some have already become brilliant climbers, some have just attended to have a good climb and some have moved onto to our advanced Craghoppers club.

Craghoppers

Some 14 and up to 17 years olds are proficient enough in their climbing to have less direct instructor help. If approved to enter, the Craghopper club is more focussed on technique and climbing skills. Each weekly session will major on one aspect of climbing but will also involve route setting and a competition and good old cranking up the walls!

Each trained instructor has charge over up to 9 children. If any are Junior Comp (see here) then they may allow members to climb and even lead climb on their own accord, this gives our young adults the opportunity to climb with their peers in an adult environment, but still supervised.Craggy Island indoor climbing

At the end of each term all will receive a special award sheet to show they attended Craghoppers and the items they covered.
